Danger Looms In Kwamang…As Residents Resort Into Open Defecation

A Farming Community located on the Offinso-Ahenkro road in the Afigya Kwabre-North Constituency of the Ashanti Region are living in fear of a possible outbreak of disease in the community following the deplorable state of three toilet facilities in the community.
The situation, according to residents, expressed angrily about the three death trap toilet facilities in the community is affecting their health. Even though, they admitted that due to the bad nature of the facilities, they have no other alternative than to defecate openly on the soldiers of the toilet. They sadly stressed that if you are a woman and a man is coming for the same purpose, you have to shout if not he will just appear on you. One of the women lamented.

The community is estimated to have over 2,000 voters’ population according to AmNews findings, with the three (3) old dilapidated toilet facilities whose life span is threatened of possible collapse. The community lacks social amenities like; market, police station, and the only health facility that serve the community is in bad shape in terms of logistics and operational equipment, no social-centre, no street lights and most importantly, the only road that linking the community and Ahenkro has been abounded for years and dust is swallowing them.

When the news team spoke to some of the residents, they expressed angrily about the unsave state of the community accusing the Assemblyman and Unit Committee Members in the area for exposing the community members into such health hazard at the time the three toilet facilities generate close to Ghc600 monthly into the community development fund.

According to an Information Service Manager, Akwasi Oppong, averred that the attitude of the assemblyman and Unit Committee Members toward the community development is not satisfactory following the level at which they confront issues relating to the community progress. He reiterated that the alacrity in putting the welfare of the community ahead personal gain is questionable among opinion leaders and government officials.
“The Kwamang community is compounded with sanitation challenges of which they worry of possible outbreak of diarrhoea and other unseen disease that may ultimately attack the community”.

Mr. Akwasi Oppong popularly known as ‘Acoustic’ reiterated that the problems in the community, they have made frantic effort to outline the shot falls of the community to the chief, Nana Owusu Boateng and the Queen Mother for redress but it seems to be a sky rocketing. It looks so depressed to note that a community in the Ashanti Region is still condoning in public defecation as a result of unavailablity of toilet facilities in this 21st century. He stressed upsettingly appealing to opinion leaders, the chief of the community, the Member of Parliament, and all able businessmen and women including individuals to come to the aid of the community in the area of sanitation.
